Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the natural responses of trees to pests, disease causing organisms, disorder causing factors and stress.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of common diseases of amenity trees.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of common pests of amenity trees.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of common amenity tree disorders.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of common non-disease causing fungi associated with trees.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of quarantine legislation for pest and disease control for amenity trees.

Content
- Natural tree responses to pests, diseases and disorders, immediate and long term
- Methodical inspection
- Common signs and/or symptoms of pests, disease or disorder, diagnosis
- Inspection of infected trees and their environment
- Life cycles of pests and diseases in terms of vulnerable points allowing control
- Common amenity tree disorders, and correction methods to minimise damage
- Fungi and host associations and beneficial effects, and encouragement of quarantine system and biosecurity system in New Zealand
- Tree pests and diseases for which quarantine is of high importance.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching and learning methods will be face to face delivery including workshops, project based interactive tasks, with group sessions, tutorials, and creation of portfolios of evidence.
Assessment Criteria
The weight of the overall assessment is equally distributed across learning outcomes.
The portfolio of evidence will demonstrate the achievement of the required knowledge, competencies and capabilities across all learning outcomes.

An extended reading list will be supplied by the tutor at commencement of the module. This will be updated annually.
