The aim of this module is to develop students’ ability to identify tree pruning requirements and undertake appropriate tree pruning.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Identify the tree form and features to be emphasised.
2. Prune semi mature and mature amenity trees with hand tools
3. Prune semi mature and mature amenity trees with a chainsaw.
Content: - Tree forms, pruning objectives
- Tree features and client requirements
Target pruning
- Hazard identification and control
- Pruning; crown reduction, crown lifting, crown thinning, deadwooding, formative or restoration, removal of damaged branches and stems
Working techniques and progression, ground staff role
- Pruning with hand tools above ground
- Tree accesses
Chainsaw selection, preparation, starting, and use above ground
Teaching and Learning Strategy: Teaching and learning methods will be face to face delivery including workshops, project based interactive tasks, with group sessions, tutorials, and creation of portfolios of evidence.
Assessment Criteria: The weight of the overall assessment is equally distributed across learning outcomes.
The portfolio of evidence will demonstrate the achievement of the required knowledge, competencies and capabilities across all learning outcomes.

Workshops and projects will be supported with online material via the Wintec Moodle learning site.
