Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the physical characteristics of woody stemmed plants.
2. Describe a range of trees, shrubs and climbers used in amenity horticulture.
Content
- Basic plant parts; flower, stem, node, internode, leaf blade, lead petiole, roots
- Identifying features; leaf type, tendril, leaf arrangement, leaf shape, leaf colour, growth habit
- Plant parts of angiosperms; flower shape and colour, inflorescence, flowering period
- Reproductive structures of gymnosperms and ferns
- Evidence of 30 different specifies, at least; five trees, five shrubs, five climbers, pressed, dried and mounted or photographed.
- Specimen to show if available; bark, stem, leaves, leaf arrangement, flower, fruit
- Plant labelling: genus, species, cultivar or variety, common name, family name, identifying features: plant type, use, cultural requirements, and date and site collected from/photographed.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Theoretical face-to-face and online sessions including tutorials, workshops, group activities, discussion, workbooks, independent learning, and assignments.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is competency-based. In order to pass this module, students must attempt and meet all the requirements of the competency-based assessments including carrying out all tasks in a safe manner and to industry standard.
Learning and Teaching Resource
Workshops and projects will be supported with online material via the Wintec Moodle learning site.
An extended reading list will be supplied by the tutor at commencement of the module. This will be updated annually.
