1. Demonstrate knowledge of advanced felling techniques.
2. Directionally fell trees using advanced felling techniques.
3. Describe methods to handle wind thrown trees, and safety requirements.
Content
- Non-routine tree felling situations and safety requirements described
Advanced felling techniques described, cuts and uses
- Wedge use described and demonstrated
- Felling sequences described, and demonstrated
- Techniques; scarfing, back-cutting, bore and release cutting, bore cutting a scarf, low and high release cuts on forward leaning trees, double leaders, are demonstrated
- Directional felling; side leaning, back leaning, forward leaning, double andmulti leaders
- Use of wedges and hingewood depth methods, split level back cut, bore and release methods.
- Felling where diameter is twice the guide bar length
- Safety requirements, codes of practice and work place procedures, working in safe zones, consideration of others near site
- Wind-thrown hazards identified, treatments described, trees felled
- Compression and tension woods
- Health and Safety
- Sustainable practices
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching and learning methods will be face to face delivery including; workshops, project based interactive tasks, with group sessions, tutorials, on-line learning, work integration, and independent research for the creation of portfolios of evidence of learning.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. Students must gain a minimum mark of 50 in the achievement-based assessments and meet all the requirements of the competency-based assessments including carrying out all tasks in a safe manner and to industry standard to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be based on the marks from the achievement-based assessment tasks
