o Soil properties; types, nutrient content, chemical properties, aeration, compaction, depth, drainage, pans, water holding capacity, water table, salinity, texture
o Measures used to assess and restore soil
o Soil borne pests and diseases, signs and symptoms
o Climatic factors; temperature ranges, rainfall, moisture deficit, drought, frost, hail, snow
o Climatic influences; aspect, proportion shade, wind, flooding, salt spray, water table
o Site factors, access, building, light requirements, power lines, overhead obstructions, views, neighbouring property affects, reflections
o Root zone factors; drains, foundation, impermeable paving, root control pits, underground services
o Air and water pollution factors
o Human influences, and responsibilities; site use, design intentions, neighbouring sites, access, screening, shade, shelter, sunlight, vandalism, views
o Tree types analysis; growth rates, soil modification, features, urban adaptation, safety issues, toxicity, size requirements
o Tree identification for specified sites; clay, dry, peat, shallow, wet, small sites, saline winds, exposed sites, cold winters, vehicle emissions, pollution, heavy shade, light shade

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching and learning methods will be face to face delivery including; workshops, project based interactive tasks, with group sessions, tutorials, on-line learning, work integration, and independent research for the creation of portfolios of evidence of learning.
Learning Outcomes
1: Assess environmental factors likely to affect tree selection, growth or survival.
2: Specify tree species suited to different sites that could enhance that site..
3: Undertake a preliminary site analysis for a specific site, select trees species to suit requirements, and plan location of those trees, on site.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. Students must gain a minimum mark of 50% in the achievement-based assessments and meet all the requirements of the competency-based assessments including carrying out all tasks in a safe manner and to industry standard to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be based on the marks from the achievement-based assessment tasks.
