- Assessment, monitoring and introductory practice skills (baseline observations - mother and baby, abdominal palpatation, fetal auscultation, antenatal assessment, supporting women/pregnant people in labour and birth, postnatal assessment, breastfeeding basics, infant CPR)

Learning Outcomes
LO1: Explain the theories and principles that underpin introductory midwifery practice skills.
LO2: Perform a range of selected assessment and practice skills including drug calculations to enable culturally competent and safe midwifery practice.
LO3: Safely administer medicines, including accurately calculating medication doses, for midwifery practice.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning and teaching activities will employ a range of elements drawn from approved methods. The activities chosen will align with the context of the learning (delivery mode, regional-specific requirements, etc.) and any particular needs of the group of aakonga.

Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this course supports both achievement and competency-based assessment. Aakonga must achieve all learning outcomes and successfully complete all assessment items to pass this course.

Competency-based assessment completion: Aakonga must successfully complete all specified competency-based assessment items. There are no resubmission/resit opportunities for competency assessments.

Achievement-based assessment completion: Aakonga must submit all specified achievement-based assessment items and obtain a minimum of 50% in each achievement-based assessment.
