LO1: Use knowledge of the physiology of conception, implantation, placentation, and the development of organ systems in the embryo and fetus to support and facilitate physiological processes during the childbirth continuum.
LO2: Use knowledge of the anatomical changes and physiological functioning of body systems during pregnancy, labour, birth and puerperium to inform midwifery practice.
LO3: Apply practice-based evidence to inform decision making in culturally competent midwifery practice.
LO4: Use knowledge of the Midwifery Scope of Practice and professional frameworks to underpin midwifery practice.
Content
- Anatomy and physiology relating to pregnancy, labour, and birth including menstrual cycle, pre-conceptual influences, fetal development, physiology of labour and birth
- Anatomy and physiology of puerperium
- Structure and functions of the female reproductive system
- Physiology of conception and implantation, placental development and function, embryological and fetal development
- Normal discomforts of pregnancy
- Immunisations in pregnancy
- Stages of labour
- Teratogens
- Maternal physiological changes in pregnancy, labour and birth, the puerperium and lactation and the hormonal regulation of these changes
- Working with pain in labour
- Interpretation of laboratory results and other investigations common in normal pregnancy and childbirth
- Pre-pregnancy planning, pre-conceptual advice, and health promotion
- Pregnancy confirmation and gestational age estimation
- Health education to promote and maintain health for the woman/pregnant person and baby throughout pregnancy, labour, birth, and the puerperium including immunisation
- Nutrition (food sources, general role of micronutrients and macro nutrients) and exercise
- Antenatal screening
- Screening for social complexities
- Hapori and community links for support
- Application of integrated assessment skills to the woman/pregnant person, fetus and neonate throughout the childbearing continuum
- Place of birth and the impact on birth outcomes for the woman/pregnant person and her baby
- Birth/Care plan
- Comprehensive assessment of the mother up to six weeks postpartum
- Completion of midwifery care and integration with Tamariki Ora / Well Child, Well Woman services
- Screening of social variables
- Cultural competence
- New Zealand College of Midwives decision points, and the relevance of these antenatally, intrapartum, and postnatally

Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this course is achievement-based. Aakonga must submit all specified assessment items, achieve all learning outcomes, and obtain a minimum of 50% in each assessment to pass this course.

Learning and teaching activities will employ a range of elements drawn from approved methods. The activities chosen will align with the context of the learning (delivery mode, regional-specific requirements, etc.) and any particular needs of the group of aakonga.
