The aim of this course is for aakonga to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes to prescribe and administer medicines commonly prescribed by midwives, and the legislation surrounding medication use within the Midwifery Scope of Practice.

LO1: Apply pharmacological principles in preparation for safe prescription and administration of medication in midwifery practice.

- Principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, adverse drug effects, interactions, contraindications and precautions related to medicines commonly used in midwifery practice
- Effect of medicines on the body including receptor interaction
- Mechanisms of medicine absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion
- Medicines and their safety in pregnancy and lactation
- Evaluation of therapeutic effects of medicines
- Classes of medicines related to pathophysiological condition
- Opiates
- Medicine history, ongoing and systematic client assessment and evaluation related to medicine use during pregnancy, childbirth, the puerperium and lactation
- Practical application of writing prescriptions
- Calculations using mathematically derived concepts for safe prescribing and administration practices
- Use of medication for common disease processes during pregnancy and puerperium
- Antibiotics and microbiological principles applied to midwifery practice
- Vaccinations
- Contraception
- Addiction and abuse of medications
- Rongoaa and Pacific remedies
- Legislation and legal issues relevant to medicine use, prescribing and administration of medicine during maternity care
- Responsibilities of the midwife in the interprofessional health team as it relates to medicine management

Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this course is achievement-based. Aakonga must submit all specified assessment items, achieve all learning outcomes, and obtain a minimum of 50% in each assessment to pass this course.
