The purpose of this module is to introduce the student to the fundamental concepts, principles and methods of mechatronics (as they apply to IT solutions, interfaces and measurements) and information technology.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Discuss and use basic electric components, circuit analysis techniques and circuit construction good practices
2. Describe and use discrete semiconductor components
3. Discuss the concept of analogue signal processing and implementation using operational amplifiers
4. Discuss the technologies used by basic digital circuits and describe the circuit operation
5. Demonstrate knowledge of combinational digital circuits
6. Demonstrate knowledge of sequential digital circuits
7. Demonstrate knowledge of data acquisition techniques
8. Describe simple sample and hold methods of analogue-to-digital circuits
9. Explain the supporting theory and technology for displays
10. Explain the supporting theory and implementation technology for sensors
11. Discuss and explain the concepts of signal processing and storage
12. Describe the architecture of and program a basic microprocessor and microcontroller
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching methods will involve theoretical and practical classes which may include but are not limited to lectures, tutorials, computer laboratory work, group activities and assignments
Assessment Criteria
Criteria: This is an achievement-based module in which students must gain an overall grade of 50% to pass.
