Students enrolling in the prescribing practicum must hold a current New Zealand practising certificate and maintain collaborative working relationships within an inter-professional team.
Students must have access to working with clients in two clinical placements where they will develop knowledge, skills and other capabilities required to meet the Nursing Council of New Zealand competencies for the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice. The student’s clinical placements will be relevant to the area of practice the nurse will prescribe in.
The practicum requires students to complete a minimum of 300 hours of supervised clinical practice with a Designated Authorised Prescriber (DAP) who will be a Nurse Practitioner. In addition, students may be supervised by a senior Medical Practitioner. Clinical supervision will include opportunities to develop diagnostic skills, patient consultation and assessment skills, clinical decision-making and monitoring skills.
Students require authorisation from their employing organisation to complete the practicum. This organisation will support nurse prescribing as reflected in its clinical governance framework.
