Students will have an opportunity to consider both the opportunities and constraints retailers have to plan for and adapt to in a complex, changing high-tech and global environment. Students will take a contemporary and forward-looking approach to the strategic issues facing the retail industry. This module will enable students to gain an appreciation of: how to build and sustain a retail business, how to create a retail concept with unique characteristics, how to develop retailing and store location strategies, how to design and manage merchandising concepts, how to manage a retail organisation which includes human resource, logistics, financial and operations at an individual store level and as a regional/national chain.

Learning Outcomes
1. Recognise and critique, understand and differentiate retailing management approaches
appropriate with a range of different retailing characteristics and ownership models.

2. Analyse and evaluate strategic retailing options and store location strategies. Be able to
identify new opportunities in retailing whether it is with existing businesses or start-ups
enabling adoption to change through informed decision making and planning.

3. Critically evaluate and incorporate retailing strategies into appropriate management models
at national, regional and individual store levels.
Content
- This paper consists of six topics:
- Retailing management issues within the retailing concept.
- Building and sustaining a retail business.
- Developing the retailing characteristics and the most appropriate ownership model.
- Retailing and store location strategies integrated into a management model to ensure
achievement targets are met.
- Managing a multi outlet retail business incorporating merchandise management,
organisational management, human resources management, logistics management, financial
management and operations management.
- Managing the operation at both an individual store level and as a national/regional chain.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching will involve blended delivery methods incorporating the Moodle online delivery platform. Discussion of contemporary retail management practice can take place in board rooms facilitated by senior staff in their organisations or visits from these staff to the classroom; reflective practice from field trips/guest speakers; observation of strategic retail management practice from visits to malls, strips, shopping centres, distribution/logistic centres and online; and applied student work.
Basic of Assessment
Candidates must achieve a minimum result of 40 in all assessments. They must also achieve a minimum C grade pass overall from all assessments to receive a passing grade for the module.
