- 1. Discuss the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy including the foetus and placenta and their inter-relationship.
2. Apply evidence-based knowledge and critical thinking required to provide professional and culturally responsive midwifery care during the normal childbirth experience.
3. Examine the physiology of pain and consider appropriate strategies to work with women/waahine and their pain in labour.
4. Identify the potential for normal processes to be disrupted and analyse the nature of these disruptions, formulating appropriate responses to resolve problems.
5. Apply critical thinking to the management of normal pregnancy and childbirth including accountability for determining and achieving outcomes of midwifery care. - Content

• Physiology of pregnancy, labour and birth
• Recognising normal physiological processes and progress and common differences related to pregnancy labour and birth
• Physiology of pain and working with the woman/waahine in pain
• Planning, implementing and evaluating midwifery care
• Referral guidelines
• Theory and practice of named midwifery skills
• Documentation and relevant legislation - Assessment Criteria
- The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module. - Learning and Teaching Resource
