The Te Whainga/Aim of this module is to introduce students to the social work profession which will include the history of social work internationally and in Aotearoa New Zealand, language and core concepts of social work, the ANZASW code of ethics and bi-cultural practice, and social work in the context of social justice.

- 1.Review and discuss the historical development of the social work profession and practice internationally and in Aotearoa New Zealand, including Mori Social Service development and the significance of Puao Te Ata Tu.
2.Describe contemporary professional social work and social services in Aotearoa New Zealand
3.Identify and discuss key definitions and principles of social work including the IFSW Global definition of Social Work, the ANZASW Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and the SWRB Code of Conduct
4.Review strategies and principles of self-care in social work practice
5.Describe key legislation relevant to social work practice

- - Exploration of the historical development of the social work profession internationally and in New Zealand
- Introduction to the social work profession today; the Global Definition of Social Work and Aotearoa New Zealand amplification of this (currently in development) and the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development
- Professional values and ethics: Social Work's commitment to Human Rights and social Justice, the IFSW and ANZASW Codes of Ethics and code of bi-cultural practice, SWRBCode of Conduct
- An introduction to Maori and indigenous concepts of accountability and ethics
- An introduction to social work's professional and regulatory bodies: ANZASW, The Tangata Whenua Social Workers Association and the Social Workers Registration Board

- Assessment in this module is mixed mode. The application and assessment of transferable skills are integrated into the assessment tasks. To pass this module all assessments must be submitted and an overall pass mark of 50 is required. Students must also meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment task to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be based on the marks from the achievement based tasks.
The BSW is an applied academic degree which includes the requirement that students demonstrate professional practice in a range of ways. This includes high levels of attendance and participation. To this end, students who do not meet the 80 attendance criteria (without approved reason) will fail the respective module. - Required Textbooks
