- 1. Critically examine concepts and definitions related to childhood and youth.
2. Critically analyse structural drivers affecting the lives of children and youth, and their families and/or whaanau in Aotearoa New Zealand.
3. Evaluate the application of social work practice theories and models to social work with children and youth.
4. Critically analyse a range of contemporary issues related to social work with children and youth.
5. Critically reflect on professional practice issues related to social work with children and youth. - Content
- • Definitions and understandings of childhood and adolescence
• Understandings of traditional Maaori child-rearing
• The role of family and/or whaanau in the lives of children and youth.
• Legal aspects of social work with children and youth, including national and international legislation, and children’s rights.
• Contemporary theories related to social work practice with children and youth.
• Concepts of childhood well-being, trauma, abuse and neglect.
• Structural and policy issues impacting on social work with children and youth.
• Specialist practice with children and youth (for example, disability, health, mental health, addictions, youth justice, school social work, child protection)
• Professional social work issues (for example, ethics, technology) - Teaching and Learning Strategy
- May include: Project-based Learning; Flipped Classroom; Blended Learning; Work-Integrated Learning; Inclusive Practices.
Methods may include workshops and practical classes, tutorials, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning, group activities & discussion, supported online learning, e-portfolio, practice simulation. - Assessment Criteria
- The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module.
