Prescription
This module introduces students to core concepts within the fields of psychology and human development. Students will begin to understand lived experience of wellbeing across the lifespan in relation to the social, environmental, political, economic and cultural contexts of Aotearoa New Zealand. In this module a range of historical and contemporary theoretical perspectives that underpin social service assessment and interventions will be explored.

- 1. Identify Maaori and western psychology and human development theories in the context of wellbeing in counselling and social work.
2. Examine social and cultural constructions of wellbeing.
3. Understand and apply Psychology and Human Development theories to specific developmental issues and themes across the life span drawing upon both Maaori and western literature.
4. Evaluate Psychology and Human Development theories to inform relational practice with self and others drawing upon both Maaori and western perspectives. - Content

- Key psychological theories and theorists located within both Maaori and western worlds
- Concepts of development such as personality, language, intelligence, gender and socialisation including the nature v nurture debate

- Assessment in this module is mixed mode. The application and assessment of transferable skills are integrated into the assessment tasks. To pass this module all assessments must be submitted and an overall pass mark of 50 is required. Students must also meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be based on the marks from the achievement based tasks.
Paetahi Tumu Korero Bachelor of Counselling is an applied academic degree which includes the requirement that students demonstrate professional practice in a range of ways. This includes high levels of attendance and participation. To this end, students who do not meet the 80 attendance criteria (without approved reason) will fail the module. - Basic of Assessment

Critical review and discussion paragraph of a journal article chosen from a given selection.
Students will be asked to peer assess on 5 reviews.25

A collection of stories (written, oral, visual) with narrative that links theory to the personal life journey/story.35
Human Development and Psychology Case Study
An essay that incorporates an understanding of two Psychology and Human Development theories using provided videos. Reflection made on learning gained and relevance to future counselling or social work practice.40
