Prescription
Students will develop an understanding of mental health and addiction issues and their impacts upon the lives of whnau and their support systems. Students will develop a beginning Recovery oriented practice which is informed by theory and practice frameworks. Skills in screening, identification and assessment of issues will be developed. Students will learn skills in facilitating groups in the mental health and addiction context.

2. Analyse Maaori, western and other cultural practice frameworks within mental health and addictions contexts.
3. Articulate and apply a Recovery approach to practice that is informed by relevant framework and strategy documents.

- - Concepts of mental health, mental illness and addiction including sociological, psychological and biological
- Screening, identification and brief assessment of mental health and addiction issues including a consideration of risk
- Theories of mental health and addiction including Mori, western and other cultural positions
- Practice frameworks for mental health and addiction, including relevant national strategy documents and practice frameworks
- Values and attitudes and skills for working in/with mental health and addictions contexts
- Group dynamics, group process and facilitation, and their application in mental health and addiction contexts
- Philosophy principles and application of a Recovery based practice
- Categories of mental health and addiction issues including a critical consideration of diagnosis and classification
- Factors that promote wellbeing
- Factors that contribute to mental health and addiction issues including the impacts of trauma and abuse
- Stigma and discrimination and social exclusion and their impact on the lives of tangata whai ora with mental health and addiction issues including the effect of stigma and discrimination upon whnau/family and other support networks - Teaching and Learning Strategy

Methods may include workshops and practical classes, tutorials, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning, group activities & discussion, supported online learning, e-portfolio, practice simulation. - Assessment Criteria
- The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module.
Student also needs to have attended at least 80% of all classes. - Learning and Teaching Resource
