This module aims to examine the impacts of colonisation, subsequent social movements, government responses, and contemporary hapuu and iwi developments. Students will consider this learning in relation to their developing practice in Aotearoa, and will also extend their understanding of te ao Maaori through the continued application of te reo and tikanga Maaori.

Learning Outcomes: On the successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Discuss the impact of colonisation on Maaori society
2. Discuss social movements and government responses to Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi
3. Discuss hapuu / iwi developments and the implications for practice.
4. Demonstrate appropriate application of te reo and tikanga Maaori.

- Cultural dominance through religion and education
- Racism and discourses
- New Zealand land wars
- WWI and WWII
- Urbanisation
- Impact of colonisation on Maaori knowledge, health, justice and social systems
- Waitangi Tribunal - submissions and decisions
- Tikanga marae, poowhiri and hui processes
- Mihimihi and pepeha
- Te reo Maaori pronunciation
Assessment Criteria: The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, gain an overall mark of 50%, and attend the noho marae to pass this module.
Teaching and Learning Strategy: May include: Project-based Learning; Flipped Classroom; Blended Learning; Work-Integrated Learning; Inclusive Practices.
Methods may include workshops and practical classes, tutorials, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning, group activities & discussion, supported online learning, e-portfolio, practice simulation, waananga, noho marae.
Learning and Teaching Resource: An extended reading list will be supplied by the tutor at the commencement of the module. This will be updated annually.
