Prescription
To carry out routine health procedures on farms and to assist the production animal Veterinarian with manual non-veterinary procedures including client education and sales. Students completing this module will assist the production animal veterinarian with manual non-veterinary procedures, enabling the veterinarian to increase work efficiency. Under veterinary supervision, graduates will have the practical skills to be able to perform routine health procedures on farms. They will also have knowledge of basic health practices, enabling them to support the veterinarian with client education and retail sales.

Learning Outcomes
- Perform basic farm procedures to assist the farmer client and the veterinarian (handling and restraint, parasite control, stock identification,)

- Perform routine veterinary health procedures including vaccinations, S/C and I/M injections, debudding, dehorning, castration, mastitis / high SCC identification/grade busting, milk sampling, insertion of dry cow therapy, blood sampling, stomach tubing and administration of i/v treatments. Also includes CIDR insertion under veterinary supervision

- Demonstrate basic veterinary laboratory skills that will assist with the diagnosis and monitoring of disease and health problems on farms (faecal egg counts, spore counts, microscopic semen evaluation and basic staining techniques)

- Outline a range of advanced procedures (ultra-sound, artificial insemination, milking machine testing, bull fertility testing, feed budgeting and treatment options for lame cows)

- Outline routine production animal procedures and products to assist the veterinarian in educating the client

- Describe common production animal products retailed in veterinary outlets

Assessment Criteria
Mixed mode assessment made up of:

Students need to attain a mark of 50 percent for each test.

Practical skills tests will be competency based and a pass is achieved when the assessor is satisfied that the student has reached the level of competence appropriate for the task. This ensures critical tasks are completed satisfactorily

Grade Method 3 will be used for reporting purposes.

Students must pass all assessments to achieve this module.
