Learning Outcomes
1.Demonstrate knowledge of cardiovascular exercise in order to develop a best practise approach for training the general public.
2.Demonstrate knowledge of resistance training exercises and their progression in order to develop a best practise approach for training the general public.
3.Demonstrate knowledge of flexibility training in order to develop a best practise approach for training the general public.
4.Demonstrate competency in the safe application of various fitness assessment standards in order to develop a best practise approach for training the general public.
5.Demonstrate knowledge of how programmes could be modified to meet the needs of weight loss, obese, ante natal, disabled, injured, diabetic and asthmatic clients.
Content
-Principles of Training
-Pre-exercise Screening and Risk Stratification
-Components of fitness; cardiovascular, strength, flexibility.
-Fitness Assessments; range includes but not limited to:
- Cycle sub-maximal VO2 test
- Harvard Step Test
- Introductory strength tests (e.g. timed abdominal strength tests, press up tests)
- Introductory flexibility tests (e.g. sit and reach; hamstring length test; shoulder flexibility test )
- Rockport 1-mile Walk Test
-Basic Functional movement screen and postural testing e.g. standing wall test, plumb-line assessment etc.
-Contraindications to Exercise
-Personalised exercise prescription and progression. Range including but not limited to:
- Weight loss or management
- Obese clients
- Fitness conditioning
- Strength and muscle gain
- Ante natal and post natal
- Body shaping and toning
- Diabetics
- Asthmatics
-Scope of Practice
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Lectures will be used to introduce key themes and main topics to the students. Tutorial will develop concepts further through kinaesthetic or visual tasks. The assignments will encourage reflection on important concepts taught throughout the year.
Assessment Criteria
Candidates must achieve a minimum result of 40 in the final examination of this module. They must achieve a minimum C grade pass overall from assessments to receive a passing grade for this module.

An extended reading list will be supplied by the tutor at commencement of the course. This will be updated annually.
