To provide the student with a basic understanding of the nature of injuries in sport and in the workplace, including: causal factors, assessment, treatment, management and rehabilitation.

- 1.Explain the theoretical concept of sports medicine and analyse the scope of practice and functions of sports therapists including the ethical and legal issues involved.
2.Discuss the theoretical basis of injury prevention and interpret terminology relevant to sports injuries.
3.Discuss the causes and treatment of common sports injuries and assess and distinguish sports related injuries. They will be able to describe specific sport related injuries and their common causes, signs and symptoms
4.Discuss the process of soft tissue healing and common treatments used in tissue healing. They will also be able to outline the mechanisms used in common drug therapies and the known risks involved.
5.Describe acute and chronic adaptations of the motor system to altered demands of usage and how this can be applied to sport and exercise injury prevention and rehabilitation
6.Develop, implement and monitor a sport rehabilitation programme. They will be able to demonstrate proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitative and muscle energy stretching techniques, muscle release techniques and sports taping techniques.
7.Discuss special topics in sports injury prevention including the prevention of injury in female athletes, children and the elderly and considerations for disabled and special athletes. - Teaching and Learning Strategy
- Lectures will be used to introduce key themes and main topics to the students. Tutorial will develop concepts further through kinaesthetic or visual tasks. The assignments will encourage reflection on important concepts taught throughout the year.
- Assessment Criteria
- Candidates must achieve a minimum result of 40 in the final examination of this module. They must achieve a minimum C grade pass overall from assessments to receive a passing grade for this module.
