Prescription
To introduce students to the Maori guardianship of the natural environment, which includes practices in environmental, sustainability education and the position of mana whenua in Aotearoa.

Apply a framework of kaitiakitanga and accepted ethical practices in a range of outdoor environments.
Demonstrate knowledge of an environmental or sustainability issue in Aotearoa.
Prepare for, experience and participate in a noho marae.
Content
-Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
-Cultural values and practices relating to ownership, the environment, sustainability and access.
-Iwi and or hapu associated with specific outdoor adventure environments.
-Conservation, sustainability and the natural environment.
-Tikanga and kawa of iwi and or hapu.
-Marae protocols.
-Pepeha, mihi, karakia and waiata.
-Maori Language pronunciation.
-Marae visit and overnight stay.
-Visits to local environmental projects.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Blended delivery of theory, online, and practical activities.
Lectures will be used to introduce key themes and main topics to the students. Guest speakers may be invited on specialist topics. Tutorials will develop concepts further through group work, projects and online learning. The assessments will encourage reflection on important concepts taught throughout the course.
Assessment Criteria
To pass this module students must complete all assessments and accumulate an overall module mark of no less than 50%
