- LO 1: Identify and explain the use of engineering materials and metals.
LO2: Select, use and care for engineering hand tools, simple measurement and marking out equipment used in engineering.
LO 3: Identify types and use of engineering fasteners for basic assembly tasks.

- Engineering materials and metals:
- Production, physical characteristics, selection and application of engineering materials
- Engineering metals: types, properties, characteristics; selection, use and processing
- Pure metals/alloys
- Ferrous/non ferrous
- Factors influencing selection of engineering metals
- Basic workshop heat treatment
- Hot working, Cold working
- Corrosive processes and prevention, awareness of relevant standards.
Material handling:
- Basic materials handling and the use of equipment required to handle the materials
- Lifting and slinging equipment.
Simple Measuring equipment:
- Simple measuring devices: selection, use and care
Mechanical servicing and fasteners:
- Fasteners uses, types and range
Mechanical component serviced, tested, tolerances stored - Assessment Criteria
- This course is assessed using competency assessment. Aakonga must complete and submit all summative assessments in order to pass and receive credit for this course. The listed unit standards are optional and are not required to pass this course.
