Prescription
To enable students to explore myths, rituals and stories which have contributed to past and present cultures and societies. Students will develop an understanding of patterns of storytelling and ritual though investigation of past and contemporary myths. Focus will be on rites of passage, hero and heroine stories and their application in contemporary media and popular culture.

Learning Outcomes
1. Compare the role of myths and rituals from the past
2. Examine the role of myths and rituals in the present day
3. Create and present a coherent argument in written form
4. Develop skills of storytelling through creative response
Content
- Origin stories of indigenous cultures
- Oral tradition and epic storytelling, narrative patterns
- Influence of storytelling in creating cultural values, beliefs and rituals
- Mythic thinking and symbols
- Modern storytellers, myths and rituals
- Heroes, heroines and monsters
Assessment Criteria
The portfolio comprises multiple components. Students must complete all assessments and gain an overall mark of 50% in order to pass this module.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Blended – methods will involve online activities, portfolio, tutorials,
lectures, workshops, group activities, guest speakers, field trips,
critiques, collaborative projects, as appropriate.
