Iconic Wintec venue turns 90

This year marks a milestone for one of Wintec’s most notable icons – it's been 90 years since the first classes were taught out of Wintec House.

Located on the corner of Anglesea and Ward Streets at the institute’s city campus, the heritage building has become a dynamic and sought after events venue, with its rich history adding to its appeal.

This year alone the building has hosted a number of large events, including the Wintec Staff Awards and the Wintec Student Ball – both of which were themed 1920s to recognise the special 90th anniversary.

These events saw the space transformed into a grand Great Gatsby-esque affair and had involvement from a number of local businesses such as The Event Company, Kerr & Ladbrook catering, Good George brewery and The Munroes band.

But well before it was an events venue, the building housed the Hamilton Technical College and was built and opened in 1924.

The technical college evolved out of the Hamilton Manual Training Centre, also known as the Hamilton Technical Day School, which mainly conducted practical classes for a small number of day pupils and 1000 primary school pupils.

From 1924, the renamed Hamilton Technical College flourished as a combined secondary, night and trade training school.

Fast forward to 2014 and the Hamilton landmark is now home to two event spaces, The Atrium and The Long Room.

In 2010 it underwent a multi-million dollar make-over and now boasts a stylish brick façade, stunning glass walls, adorned ceilings and antique wood finish making it a modern and adaptable space.

Today, Wintec House caters for a range of events including business meetings and conferences, corporate functions, exhibitions, weddings, school balls and award ceremonies and the flexible spaces can hold anywhere between 10 and 500 people.

Other events this year have included the Chinese Moon Festival, ReStyle fashion show, Matariki dinner, and both real estate and business awards.
