Student apartments to open on Wintec’s Hamilton campus

A new student apartment complex is set to open on Wintec’s Hamilton city campus in January, 2015.

The Wintec Student Residence Trust Board is investing $3.8m to transform a teaching block into 12 state-of-the-art, self-catered apartments housing 71 students.

Built across three floors, each apartment will contain either five or six bedrooms, separate shower and toilet facilities and a full kitchen and dining area. Each level will include a large common room and study area with shared laundry facilities and storage available on the lower ground floor.

Wintec chief executive, Mark Flowers says this is the first time student accommodation has been available on the campus.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the vibrancy of student life increase once the Wintec Apartments open. Having student accommodation options on the campus reflects the priority we are giving to further improve services for students.

“The facility will provide a safe, secure, high quality accommodation option, and it will be great to see a range of students enjoying this in the heart of Wintec.

The apartment building, like the current Student Village on Collingwood Street, will be run by the Wintec Accommodation Services – the trust’s trading name.

The Trust’s general manager, Martin Thomas, says the Wintec Apartments will complement the Student Village accommodation.

“While our Student Village is aimed at students wanting a higher level of pastoral care including meals and a programme of social activities, the Wintec Apartments are for students wanting more independence.

“With the added benefits that living on the campus brings, such as proximity to classes, food outlets and public transport and easy involvement in social and community events, the apartments will provide an enhanced student experience for students.

“We’ve already had a large number of enquiries from students across the country and we expect the rooms to fill up quickly. Early applications will be given priority,” he says.

The weekly cost of a room in the apartment building is $180 which includes power, phone and wireless broadband. Students can apply now to reserve a space in the complex which is due to open in mid-January, in time for Semester 1.
