Wintec awards recognise outstanding adult learners
Wintec’s top adult students were recognised at its annual Adult Leaner Awards on Tuesday night.
The awards are Wintec’s way of acknowledging Adult Learners’ Week, He Tangata Matauranga (8-14 September), and six awards are given out, valued at $1000 each.
The awards are available to all students aged 25 and above studying at Wintec and are given to outstanding adult learners who: show enthusiasm and commitment to their learning; support and encourage others in learning activities; share their skills, knowledge and abilities; and challenge themselves and others with new ideas.
This year’s winners are:
- Luke Hutching, of Hamilton (Studying New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Electrical) in the Centre for Engineering and Industrial Design)
- Tanja Allen, of Te Awamutu (Studying a Master of Sport Science in the Centre for Sport Science and Human Performance)
- Jefferson Toledo Salazar, originally from Colombia, (Studying New Zealand Certificate of English Language Level 1 in the Centre for Languages)
- Naomi Mai, of Hamilton (Studying a Bachelor of Media Arts (Communication) School of Media Arts)
- Penny Chan, of China (Studying Certificate in Cookery Level 3 at the Centre for Beauty, Hairdressing and Hospitality).
Wintec Chief Executive Mark Flowers said the awards were an important annual event.
“These are students who have really made an impact while studying at Wintec – they have stood out to their tutors for all the right reasons and it’s great that we get to recognise them in this way.
“Studying as an adult can often involve overcoming significant obstacles and juggling priorities, so these awards are our way of formally saying ‘you’re doing a great job’.”
The awards were presented at a ceremony held at The Atrium, in Wintec House, which was attended by a crowd of around 90 including nominees, their families, and Wintec staff and tutors.
