Student success at Waikato Home and Garden Show
Wintec landscape design students picked up the gold and bronze awards for their garden courtyard design projects at this year’s Waikato Home and Garden Show yesterday, with a Wintec graduate taking home the silver award.
Landscape design students, Jessica Skipper, Archana Singh, Tyler Pere, Steven Thomson and Angela Edwards – who are in their final year of study - won the gold award for their Japanese style picturesque garden.
Skipper, who came up with the Japanese idea for the courtyard, says she’s proud of what they’ve achieved.
“Seeing the design come to life has been an unforgettable experience.”
Wintec landscape design tutor, Jan Latham says the project took a significant amount of commitment from the students and is delighted with the outcome.
“The students have all put in so much work into their courtyards and we’ve all been working long particularly long days leading up to the show, but the experience for the students is worth it.
“With six weeks left until they graduate, this has given them invaluable real-life experience. The show often proves to be an important launching pad for our landscape design students, many of whom go on to build successful careers from the connections they make here.
“It’s an opportunity for them to get out there in the public eye, put their work on display and make valuable connections.”
The gardens were designed to the brief ‘historical or contemporary picturesque garden’ and the students were judged on their courtyard design, construction, planting scheme, and finishing touches.
Wintec landscape design graduates Darroch Day and Marcus Baird took home the silver award for their picturesque Hinuera country landscape courtyard, and student Amelia Lisignoli picked up the bronze award for her romantic table setting in a French country inspired courtyard.
