Media Arts students showcase talents to the public

Waikato Institute of Technology’s (Wintec) School of Media Arts’ annual series of showcase events kicked off on Monday 16 November.

The two week-long affair will see everything from fashion, film, graphic design, music, digital media, interior design, painting, sculpture and photography on display to the public.

Wintec Media Arts Head of School Margi Moore says the showcase is an opportunity for students to celebrate their hard work with friends and family.

"It's also a really great opportunity for students' work to be seen by potential employers as they move into the workforce. I encourage the wider public to come and enjoy the work on show."

A highlight of the series is the Fashion Runway Show, which takes place on Sunday 29 November.

The show marks the end of an era for fashion design at Wintec with the Diploma in Fashion Design being replaced with a fashion pathway Bachelor of Media Arts (Fashion Design). With this in mind, the first part of the show includes a retrospective of the last seven years, featuring work from some of Wintec's top diploma design students.

Alumni and current Designers in Residence Julia Crickett and Rene Aveyard will have their designs grace the runway with the launch of their collection Coco and Loaf, and Wintec hair and beauty students will show their skills in an avant-garde, Hunger Games-themed segment.

The show will conclude with the highly anticipated final showing from our 12 graduating students who will each feature between three and five garments from their own collections.

All of the showcase events are free to attend and are open to the public, excluding the fashion Runway Show and launch of 'The New Wave: Hamilton's migrant community' book which are invite only.

The events run from Monday 16 November to Sunday 29 November.
