Multi-tasking mum’s journey to success

Rowena Caballero can’t wait to take the stage during the Waikato Institute of Technology’s (Wintec) annual graduation celebration next week.

For her it will be the result of two years of hard work and a whole heap of multi-tasking which will see her receive her Diploma in Interior Design in front of friends and family at the School of Media Arts’ graduation ceremony on Monday.

Despite questioning whether she might have left it a little late in life to study, Rowena, 44, took the plunge in 2014 and signed up to do the Diploma.

“I was inspired by the thought of gaining a qualification and being able to do something that I love, regardless of age.”

She spent the first semester juggling study with a full-time job at the New Zealand Red Cross as a retail coordinator as well as a marketing role at EdHub, The Educators Resource Network.

In semester two she dropped down to part-time work to focus more on her studies.

Along with balancing work and study, Rowena also had her hands full taking care of her two children as a solo parent.

She says she couldn’t have made it through without time management skills and the support she received from her tutors.

Despite having to wear many different hats, Rowena’s hard work paid off and she made an instant impression in the industry.

While completing work experience at the Kitchen Studio in Hamilton as part of her course requirements, she was offered a job and is currently working there as a senior design consultant.

“I feel that I made the right decision and the stress and sleepless nights were well worth it…it’s a whole new exciting world.”

Rowena urges others to follow her lead and give studying a go.

“Everything is manageable if you fully commit, focus, and stay with the pack - your class. Don't get left behind in whatever you do.”
