Wintec’s diverse culture to be celebrated
Wintec’s students and staff are invited to celebrate and experience different cultures at the inaugural “Culture Fest” this week.
The event is an opportunity for all students to celebrate as they head towards the end of the year and to enjoy food, entertainment and activities from different cultures. The “Culture Fest” will take place on The Green, outside the hub, at Wintec’s city campus from 6pm to 9pm on Thursday 3 November.
With Wintec students and staff representing more than 50 nationalities, Wintec’s Director of Internationalisation, Sami Yaghi says: “our cultural diversity is something that’s really important to Wintec. Internationalisation is an integral part of our identity as a leading institute of technology, in how we operate, and how we set up global connections for all of our students, staff and employers”.
Sami said the event was all about “sharing a meal with your neighbours” and acknowledging the important role international students play at Wintec.
“Having an increasingly multi-cultural student body enables our students, our staff, employers and the wider community to become more globally aware and connected.”
The “Culture Fest” will feature a range of performers including Cook Island dancers, Japanese drummers, Wai taiko, and a Chinese dragon. Other activities will include Chinese calligraphy and paper cutting and there will be spot prizes up for grabs. There will also be a special screening of a short film celebrating Wintec’s history and diversity.
Entry is free and the first 500 people attending will receive a free meal (student and staff ID required), with a range of food options available including Indian, Thai and Japanese as well as vegan options.
