Trades training back on for Otorohanga next year

Successful discussions between Wintec and the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) have secured funds to enable trades training programmes to be offered in Otorohanga next year.

Wintec announced recently its trades training programme would not be offered in Otorohanga in 2017 due to funding cuts for this level of training by the TEC.

Wintec chief executive Mark Flowers says turning around the decision by the TEC to release more funding is great news for Otorohanga and supports Wintec’s aim to support education, training and employment in the region.

“This is a great outcome for Otorohanga and probably the best outcome we could hope for, considering our longstanding commitment and relationship with the Otorohanga community. Our challenge now is to reach the right people in time for them to enrol for 2017.”

The trades training courses available in Otorohanga next year will include two intakes for the Manufacturing and Technology: Automotive, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering strand of the My Career Pathways six month programme.

“Wintec will continue to work with the Otorohanga community to provide ongoing training aimed at developing industry-relevant skills and qualifications for work-ready graduates,” says Mr Flowers.

In 2017 Wintec will also offer programmes in Otorohanga relating to computing, business, adult teaching and adult education and training.
