Reive, who is based at the Taranaki Daily News, beat fellow Fairfax Media finalists, Scott Donaldson (Southland Times) and Phillip Rollo (Nelson Mail).

The annual awards, which have been running for 36 years, recognise New Zealand’s top sports journalists and photographers. There were more than 110 entries across all New Zealand media organisations this year.
