Wintec staff dominate local finalists in prestigious art award

The Essence of Art - Part 1, Tony Nicholls, finalist, 2016 National Contemporary Art Award.

Three of the four Hamilton-based finalists in this year’s National Contemporary Art Award are closely connected with Wintec’s School of Media Arts. They are visual arts technician Tony Nicholls and lecturers Mark Purdom and Jeremy Mayall. This isn’t a first for these three artists, who have all been selected as finalists in recent years through a blind judging process.

The National Contemporary Art Award attracts  high numbers of entries from emerging and established artists and is a highly anticipated event on the New Zealand arts calendar.

Final judging of the 51 finalists selected by judge Elizabeth Caldwell, Director of City Gallery Wellington will be announced at the opening ceremony on Friday 28 July at Waikato Museum.  The exhibition will open from Saturday 29 July until Sunday 5 November 2017. Find out more here.
