Wintec well on the way to wellbeing
Health, safety and wellbeing is more than a top-down job and at Wintec, participation and interaction is proving the key to greater staff awareness. It isn't just a matter of reporting and preventing; sharing the safety and wellbeing message requires a holistic approach to work, home and play where everyone can take part.
Last month’s events were the perfect illustration. More than 250 staff members attended the inaugural Wintec Wellbeing Expo held on two of Wintec’s campuses. Some 20 exhibitors contributed to the themes of health, safety and wellbeing including Mole Map, Southern Cross, Paterson Burn Optometrists, Health 2000, NZ Blood Service, Busit, World Organics, Flex Fitness, Horticulture Education Centre, Hamilton City Council and WorkWell.
“It was actually really good to get away from the desk and do some ‘me’ things. Each of the providers there had something that was applicable to me. I know the team organising the expo put a lot of thought into matching the providers to staff needs, I am looking forward to future initiatives”, one staff member said.
The team behind the expo worked to meet the needs of Wintec's employees, inspired by feedback from a staff-wide survey. The expos were part of the WorkWell wellbeing accreditation programme Wintec has recently partnered with. A key area of this is regular communication with staff throughout the wellbeing journey, and a ‘launch’ to staff to officially kick off the campaign and alignment to WorkWell.
This Wintec Wellbeing Expo was a benefit not only for the staff who discovered a large range of services but also for the exhibitors who took the opportunity to present
“I want to say thank you to the organisation team for a really wonderful event - it was great to see so many people engaging with the expo, and such a great range of activities. I’m now on the list to be contacted as a blood donor (would be my first time) because of you” another staff member said.
The expo initiative is viewed as a valuable partnership that companies, governmental agencies and non-profit organisations wish to repeat in the future.
“We really enjoyed exhibiting at Wintec, it was great to be part of such a great event and we received a lot of interest in the Southern Cross scheme. A lot of staff also checked their hearing.” A Southern Cross spokesperson said. “The set up was great and I am sure the event will continue to grow” a Flex Fitness representative added.
The Wintec Wellbeing Expo - in spite of its great success - is only one part of the WorkWell accreditation programme which aims to define priority areas and enhance the holistic wellbeing and safety of staff.
An outcome of the plan is a stand out brand for Safety and Wellbeing at Wintec. This image below will become a consistent, recognisable element across all Wintec’s future safety and wellbeing messages, campaigns and events.
The figures in the logo represent Wintec’s focus on safety, health and wellbeing. The yellow references Wintec’s brand colour and the translation in te reo Māori acknowledges the bicultural aspect of our workplace. The logo is designed to accompany and compliment the Wintec brand in print and online.
Yoga at lunchtime, the walking group break, building Wintec sport teams and many other initiatives are on the cards, involving all staff and giving them an opportunity to meet their colleagues in another context. It also helps to improve Wintec’s values.
“We were amazed with the turn out from staff and their engagement in their health and wellbeing. We received a lot of great feedback from the exhibitors following the expos and we are looking forward to working with them to build on these successful events in the future,” says Amy Shapland and Milly Connell, organisers of the Wintec Wellbeing Expo.
