IT students prove they are ready to join the workforce

Transdisciplinary research experts discussing findings in a meeting

Last week, Wintec’s Centre for Business, Information Technology and Enterprise (CBITE) launched the very first Research in Action event to showcase the innovative research Wintec is doing here in Hamilton and in the wider Waikato. A large audience - mostly from Hamilton's IT companies - attended this lunchtime event.

The Centre aims to produce high quality research outputs that deliver real-word solutions. A focus for the research team is to create strong links with industry and the event featured current research projects developed for industry application.

A very important part of the event was reserved for Wintec students. As part of their course study, students proved their skills and knowledge in real-world scenarios by providing IT solutions to customer’s problems. Throughout the year, they spent more than 450 hours on project management, learnt how customer interaction and communication is crucial and found relevant solutions to resolve issues.

On their final day at Wintec, students shared the results of their projects. They worked for a range of companies, domestic or international, newly created or well-established, technical or creative, such as PB Technologies, Symtech, SwiftlyDeft, Fonterra, Groovy Media, Grow FARM, Adventure Biking and Hiking tours, Houston Technology, Pepper Creative, Blackout Entertainment or Datacom Systems.

Student Cameron Shaw did his internship at SwiftlyDeft, a small New Zealand company that develops websites and software for clients all around the world.

“When I started my internship, I did not expect to get an opportunity to work on projects that have an immediate impact to many people, nor did I expect that I would become a key part of the development process.” he said.

Thanks to this first professional experience, Wintec graduates are equipped to enter the world of work. Some were offered assignments at the end of their internship.
