Wintec student designs take home silver at Best Awards

Wintec graduate Jazmyne Powell won silver for her Alfred Nobel: Dynamite Hot Sauce design at the Best Awards

Wintec design graduates Etana Zaguri and Jazmyne Powell were awarded silver in the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards 2018 for their packaging designs.

The awards, presented in Auckland last weekend are an annual showcase of excellence in graphic, spatial, product, interactive and motion design. The Best Design Awards measure New Zealand design against the best in the world.

The two graduates of Wintec School of Media Arts created their integrated package designs in their final year of studying design degrees last year.

Jazmyne styled the labels for Alfred Nobel Dynamite Hot Sauce on vintage Swedish matchbox art to complement the ‘explosive’ nature of the product. In contrast, Etana’s stark white design for Glacier, a premium freeze-chilled vodka, is inspired by the journey of an iceberg after it broke away from the Ross Ice Shelf in Antartica in 2002. Head of School of Media Arts Sam Cunnane says the Best Design Awards raise the standards in design and provide a window into what is happening in the design community.

“I’m very proud of the work created by our students and their tutors.

“These awards are an opportunity for our design students and our tutors to pit their work against the very best. The awards create a national platform for recognition and for the finalists and winners to build on their success.

Wintec tutors Mark Purdom and Luke McConnell, and design graduates Michelle Botting and Stacey Tangaere also had their work selected as finalists in the prestigious New Zealand design awards.
