Emerging Director joins Wintec Council this month

Carla Muller

Waikato Institute of Directors (IoD) Emerging Director, Carla Muller has landed a 12-month director development position with the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) Council.

Carla’s appointment, effective from 1 October, 2018, is for a one-year term, and was announced at the IoD Waikato Branch awards in late August.

Carla is an environmental economist for the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), an elected board member for New Zealand Institute of Primary Industry Management (NZIPIM), and a trustee at Life Education Trust Hamilton.

Wintec Chair Barry Harris says: “We are looking forward to welcoming Carla to the Council to help her further develop the potential that made her stand out from the very strong competition.

“Carla’s success is motivation for other young people to become active in governance and contribute in areas they are passionate about.

“Carla will be the youngest member of our board and her background and knowledge will provide a unique perspective on a variety of issues,” says Barry.

Carla started her governance career in 2012 with the Massey University College of Business Board. Last year, she was a finalist in the Westpac Women of Influence Awards for ‘rural’ and ‘young leader’ categories, and a winner in Hamilton’s ‘30 under 30’ awards. She has a Master’s degree in Environmental Management and a Bachelor of Applied Economics.

Carla is looking forward to observing the Wintec Council for a year, and says: “It will provide invaluable learnings from experienced directors.”

“I’m delighted to be given this opportunity to learn from, and contribute to, the Wintec Council. Education has always been something I’m really passionate about, and I think now more than ever tertiary providers need to be working collaboratively with employers and industry to meet our future education and workforce needs. This is something I believe Wintec does very well,” explains Carla.

The governance internship comes as part of winning the IoD Waikato Branch Emerging Director Award 2018.

The members of the Wintec Council are: Barry Harris (chair), Niwa Nuri (deputy chair), Des Brennan, Margaret Devlin, Kiri Goulter, Sandie Gusscott, Aaron Rink and Ping S’ng.
