Wintec strengthens ties with overseas universities to co-deliver qualifications

The Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) is actively partnering with China-based education providers to deliver pathways for international students and staff.

Wintec has over two decades of working partnerships with tertiary education providers in China.

Wintec’s most recent partnership is a joint programme with Jinzhou Medical University (JZMU), which began in 2021.

Representatives from JZMU recently met with leadership from Wintec in Hamilton to sign an articulation pathway agreement, further strengthening the relationship between the two institutes.

Wintec Tumu Whenua ā-Rohe 2 | Executive Director Region 2 Huia Haeata and Jinzhou Medical University President Qu Wei sign articulation pathway agreement at Wintec’s City Campus

The agreement allows JZMU students to transfer credits into Wintec’s Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science programme starting July 2025, granted they meet specific criteria. JZMU President Qu Wei joined Wintec Tumu Whenua ā-Rohe 2 | Executive Director Region 2 Huia Haeata for the formal signing ceremony at Wintec’s City Campus in September.

“Working in partnership with JZMU opens doors to enormous opportunities for staff and students from both institutions,” Wintec International Director Girish Nair said.

“Co-delivering the sports qualification in China not only provides a pathway for their students but also enables staff exchanges between the two institutes, which creates an amazing opportunity for staff to experience different styles of teaching, diverse cultures, and workplace environments.

“Also, alongside obtaining an internationally recognised qualification, studying abroad offers students valuable soft skills and opportunities to explore other cultures and world views, making them culturally competent to operate in any environment, and these life experiences can enhance students' appeal to potential employers."

Representatives from Wintec and Jinzhou Medical University conclude formal signing ceremony.

JZMU is among other Chinese tertiary institutions that Wintec has partnered with.

Wintec operates joint institutions with Jinhua University of Vocational Technology and Guizhou Light Industry Technical College, offering a range of joint programmes, with Wintec currently hosting a study tour of nine students and two teachers from Guizhou Light Industry Technical College. Wintec also offers a joint programme with Zhengzhou Preschool College.

Together, these partnerships result in over 2,000 offshore enrolments per year for Wintec.

These international engagements enable students at these Chinese institutions to pathway into various qualifications offered at Wintec, including graphic design, information technology (IT), construction management, and music education.

Wintec Executive Director Huia Haeata has recently returned from visiting each joint programme partner in China this month as part of the freshmen welcome ceremonies for each college.

Wintec is actively exploring opportunities with education providers around the world.

This week sees three international delegations being welcomed to Wintec’s Hamilton campuses.
