Summary

Excel in administration and develop your business admin and technology skills to succeed in dynamic office environments. Administrators are the backbone of organisations and have a vast array of responsibilities to keep operations running smoothly.

This programme will equip you with the essential skills and knowledge to use business technologies, produce business documents, and perform a range of administrative tasks in today's multicultural workplaces. You learn from highly qualified tutors with extensive experience as practising professionals, and our hands-on approach will see you master data processing, file management, and digital admin tools, as well as contribute effectively within a team.

At the end of the semester, you will have the opportunity to put your learning into practice through work experience at a local business, gaining real-world insights and enhancing your employability.

What you will learn

Core and technical skills include:

  • Business technologies and software in both cloud and desktop formats.
  • Digital web-based tools and applications, like Microsoft Teams and conferencing platforms.
  • Data processing, producing reports, creating spreadsheets and performing financial calculations.     
  • Customer service techniques to best meet stakeholder expectations. 
  • Working cooperatively within a team to contribute to the achievement of objectives. 
  • Written communication for business correspondence, documents, and emails.
  • Administrative systems and processes such as meeting preparation, file storing, scanning, and copying.

Soft skills include: 

  • Professional and ethical behaviour in a socially and culturally responsible manner.
  • Apply personal and interpersonal skills to contribute to the performance of the office.
  • Problem-solving, decision-making and self-management.

Scheduling and workload

We offer both a traditional face-to-face teaching environment and a blended mode that combines a mix of online learning and in-person workshops.

As a general guideline, you are expected to attend classes up to 16 hours per week (as a full-time student). Scheduled classes are usually between 8am to 5pm. In addition, you are expected to complete some self-directed study and/or work placement hours.

Career/further opportunities

Graduates will be ready to work in roles such as receptionist, office junior, administrator, records officer, or data processor. 

This course is also an excellent foundation for further business and accounting studies. Once complete, you can continue onto our New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5) programme.

Entry criteria

General admission
There is open entry to this programme although you must demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success.

English language requirements
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an academic International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5 (general or academic), with no individual band score lower than 5; or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

If you are a new student, it is compulsory for you to attend your first day (induction), and we welcome you to bring whānau and friends to support you. You will be introduced to your tutors and new classmates, be given an overview of this programme, and receive a personalised timetable before beginning your first class.

What you will need

Please bring a pen and paper with you on your first day. There are no required textbooks, and workbooks will be available digitally in Moodle.

You can bring your own device (laptop or tablet). We strongly encourage this as you will be able to follow along more closely in some lectures and classes. All students also have access to computer labs and computers in the hub.

He reo pōwhiri, your official welcome to Wintec

Tēnei te mihi mahana ki a koe e piki nei, e kake nei ki te Kuratini o Waikato.

You are warmly invited to attend the official welcome to Wintec for all new students, staff and whānau (family) at either our marae, Te Kōpū Mānia o Kirikiriroa or Rotokauri campus. The pōwhiri is a welcoming ceremony involving mihimihi (speeches), waiata (singing), and will conclude with kai timotimo (light refreshments). Please gather at the campus hubs, and a staff member will guide you through our pōwhiri.
