Building and Construction Pathway

The Building and Construction Vocational Pathway is all about the buildings and structures that we use every day. The work is project based, hands on, creative and satisfying. You will likely work as part of a team, completing projects to a high standard but frequently in an informal, onsite setting. Your worksite may change often. The construction industry involves all aspects of constructing and maintaining buildings: from electrical to design, plumbing to quantity surveying. The range of specialities is huge. The infrastructure industry includes drainage, roading, telecommunication and electricity networks and more. Te Ara Pūtake My Academic Pathway

Hamilton City Campus, Rotokauri Campus - Sport Health strand

This programme is for those who want to begin study, but need to build confidence or brush up on skills. Students will choose from five pathways that align with their career goals, including: Health, Social Practice, Media Arts, Early Childhood, and the Open pathway for general subjects and skills. Students will gain essential academic knowledge, capabilities, and skills needed to succeed at higher levels of study.

Automotive Engineering 3

Hamilton Rotokauri Campus

Students in this course gain valuable hands-on experience working on a range of vehicles. They spend four-days-a-week on campus participating in variety of projects. They are encouraged to find industry work experience for the fifth day to practice the skills gained in class. Students learn to test and diagnose procedures, study fuel-injected motors, and work with vehicles, trucks, and test equipment.

New Zealand Certificate in Applied Science (Level 3)

Hamilton City Campus, Hamilton Rotokauri Campus

This programme is a starting point for those interested in a career in science and/or engineering. This programme provides a pathway for entry into higher-level science programmes, or to the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering, for those students who don’t already meet the academic entry requirements.

New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3)

Hamilton Rotokauri Campus

This course provides students with technical knowledge about the construction industry as well as helping to build their practical, hands-on skills and overall confidence. It covers key aspects such as health and safety, trade calculations, hand tools, and project work related to different aspects of the construction industry.

New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Pre-Trade (Level 3)

Hamilton Rotokauri Campus

This course gives students a good foundational knowledge of the electrical industry - including electrical theory as well as training on electrical tools. On completion, students will have the skill base, knowledge, and confidence to move into an apprenticeship within the electrical trade sector.

New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 3)

Hamilton Rotokauri Campus

In this course, students develop the skills necessary to succeed as mechanical tradespeople (such as fitters and welders). Theory projects are designed to challenge and develop their skills with powered industrial equipment, technical drawing, measurement, and hand tools.

New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing, Gasfitting, and Drainlaying

Hamilton Rotokauri Campus

This course is designed for those who aspire to become apprentices and eventually practice as plumbers, gasfitters, and drainlayers. Upon completion, students will be equipped with confidence through their technical knowledge of the industry as well as the hands-on skills they have learned, that will help them gain apprenticeships.

Rolling start-dates

This course is a managed apprenticeship programme where students study part-time towards becoming qualified while working in a full-time job. Students are supported by a licenced builder gaining hands-on knowledge and practical skills required to succeed in the construction industry.

Mechanical Engineering Level 5

This course is ideal for experienced tradespeople wanting to progress into advanced positions in the mechanical engineering, construction, manufacturing, and fabrication industries. Designed for those who have already completed a mechanical engineering-related Level 4 trade, it provides students with further opportunities to develop their technical and/or operational knowledge, and skills within their chosen discipline.

New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology (Level 6)

Hamilton City Campus

Students in this programme will learn to prepare fully detailed drawings and specifications for the construction of buildings, both manually and using CAD packages. Students will be equipped to work as an architectural technician in small-to-medium-scale building projects.

New Zealand Diploma in Construction (Level 6)

Students in this programme will learn the practical skills for quantity surveying, which includes estimating and feasibility, quantification, pricing, and financial administration of a project during construction.

New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil)

This two-year programme will provide students with the practical skills and knowledge for working on the design, construction, and maintenance of civil engineering infrastructure, from roads and bridges to harbours, water, and wastewater facilities.

This programme is for those who want a career in engineering. Students will learn theory and practical skills using technology in our engineering labs. The Bachelor of Engineering Technology is accredited by the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ). As a mechanical engineering technologist, you will design and give advice on the building and repair of machines and tools.
