Bring your own device (BYOD)

Wintec is moving to an innovative model of teaching and learning. As part of this initiative, student learning activities will be undertaken in flexible, adaptable and agile learning environments.  

Students in the following programmes are encouraged to bring their own device (a laptop):

Having a portable device will enable personalised learning in a variety of individual and collaborative settings throughout your student learning journey.  If you don’t have your own laptop, you will be able to use a Wintec loan laptop as required.

Please note: These are the minimum requirements for new devices that will be supported by Wintec.  

Wintec will not be responsible for any liability, performance or access issues that may arise on devices with lesser specifications than those listed below.  

Students are responsible for providing their own anti-virus software.

IT support

During your studies you can access the following support with your laptop:

Wintec will provide the following software free of charge

  • Office 365 subscription with 1TB of OneDrive storage (the cost of purchasing Microsoft Windows is not covered by Wintec)

Recommended laptop specifications for IT students

These specifications are for students studying the following programmes:

  • Bachelor of Applied Information Technology
  • New Zealand Diploma in Information Technology Technical Support
  • New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology

Note: Wintec has a multimedia computer lab that can be used for GPU intensive modules

Wintec will provide the following software free of charge:

  • Microsoft Imagine which provides free Windows Desktop, Server, Visual Studio Enterprise, Visio, Project, SQL server and more (IT students only)
  • VMware workstation pro (IT students only).
