Industry Connections

Local companies, Crown Research Institutes, Universities, government agencies and other organisations connect with the Centre for Applied Science and Primary Industries in a range of ways. Our industry connections host work placements, give guest lectures, commission contract research, participate in collaborative research, provide supervision of student projects, support student prizes and more.

Employers keenly seek graduates from the Centre, that's why local and international students choose Wintec. If your organisation is recruiting graduates, or you would like to join the many organisations with links to the Centre, please contact our team at science.admin@wintec.ac.nz for more information.

Employer partnership groups

Employer partnership groups are a way for businesses and community groups in the Waikato region to get together with staff from the Centre for Applied Science and Primary Industries to talk about key industry trends, issues and directions.

The purpose of these groups is to make sure that the training and education Wintec is offering its students is meeting the needs of businesses and organisations in our region. Members give strategic advice as well as feedback on the currency and relevance of teaching and the employability of our graduates.

Applied Science

The Applied Science programme focuses on preparing work-ready graduates who have gained both valuable skills and experience through skills-based learning and real-world experience in the industry.  Our graduates are ideally placed to progress into quality assurance, testing and research roles in the food, environmental, biotechnology and microbiology-based industries.

All graduates of the Diploma of Applied Science must complete a three-week full-time placement with local industry hosts. The Waikato is a hub of environmental and agricultural-based research, manufacturing and testing laboratories, who are employers of our graduates. During and after each work placement the efficacy of the programme is reviewed and feedback is sought from industry, often kanohi ki te kanohi, on how the programme can better meet their needs.

Agricultural industry connections

Where better to learn agriculture than in the centre of New Zealand's largest dairying area, the Waikato? There are over 6,000 dairy farmers all within a two-hour drive of the Wintec classroom.

Wintec keeps in close contact with the industry through such organisations as Fonterra and the Dairy Education Hub with a membership made up of a range of education providers and companies involved in the dairy industry.

Horticulture, Arboriculture and Landscape Design industry connections

The industry is on the doorstep - literally - for students of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Landscape Design and Construction. Being located at the internationally recognised Hamilton Gardens means students learn first-hand how the industry operates.

Our students carry out projects involving the maintenance of the Gardens. In recent years, the Hamilton Gardens has undertaken several large landscaping projects which students have been able to watch and learn from, with the added advantage of working with the professional staff at the Hamilton Gardens.

Find information here on Wintec Horticulture Arboriculture, Landscape Design and Construction internships, work placements and available arboriculture services.

Animal Technology industry connection

The Wintec Veterinary Industry relationships are growing every year. Animal Technology work with over 100 veterinary clinics and animal facilities to help provide our students with a wide variety of experiences, work placements and opportunities.

Wintec has regular contact with industry providers who provide honest regular feedback around trends and direction if needed.

Our Diploma/Certificate graduates often leave to pursue their new career with employment gained through work placement they have attended whilst studying.
