Māori Health Research - Summer Studentships
Background
These studentships, aim to introduce research to undergraduate students wanting to develop their research skills with supervision and guidance from experienced senior researchers. They provide an opportunity to develop a career in health research by working on a 10-week project over the summer break.
Eligibility
Selection will be based on the potential of the student to have a career with significant involvement in Māori health research and the quality of their intended supervision. Supervisors should be a suitable role model, with a clearly demonstrated record of publication in health research and the necessary time, interest and enthusiasm to give to the student (maximum of two students per supervisor). The project should be a distinct piece of research that is achievable within the period of the studentship (usually ten weeks). Some training in research methodology and report writing should be involved, and the student is encouraged to present the results at a seminar and/or by publication. It is the student's and the supervisor's joint responsibility to ensure that the project is completed on time.
If ethics approval is required for the summer studentship, it is the supervisor's responsibility to ensure that this is obtained at the time an application is submitted for consideration. Otherwise, students are advised to select a project that does not require ethics approval.
Research projects should be related directly to the health of iwi/Māori with the precise topic to be determined by the applicant and their supervisor.
