About

Our scholarships support you on your journey towards being a great teacher or kaiako. Whether you are a graduate or undergraduate, a school leaver or a career changer, have the passion to teach early childhood, primary, secondary or in immersion settings; there are great choices available for you.

We can cover the cost of your course fees and pay you an allowance throughout the duration of your study.

If you are planning on enrolling, or are already enrolled on an approved Initial Teacher Education course - you may be eligible for one of our five scholarships.

Te Huawhiti Career Changer Scholarship

2024 applications open Tuesday 19 September 2023 and close Tuesday 17 October 2023

A Te Huawhiti scholarship provides financial assistance so the loss of income you experience while studying is not a barrier to obtaining a teaching qualification.

The scholarship is designed to assist applicants studying to teach any subject in any sector.

Undergraduate or graduate, if you are enrolled on, or plan to enroll on, any approved teaching programme this could be the scholarship for you.

Te Huarau Scholarship

2024 applications open Tuesday 16 January 2024 and close Tuesday 13 February 2024 

If you want to become a teacher or kaiako, a Te Huarau Scholarship can support your journey. 

The scholarship removes barriers by offering recipients financial assistance.

It is designed to assist applicants studying to teach any subject in any sector.

Undergraduate or graduate, if you are enrolled on, or plan to enrol on, any approved teaching programme this could be the scholarship for you.

Te Waka Whakarei Career Changer Scholarship

2024 applications open Tuesday 19 September 2023 and close Tuesday 17 October 2023

The scholarship provides financial assistance so the loss of income you experience while studying is not a barrier to obtaining a teaching qualification.

The scholarship is designed to assist applicants studying to teach in:

  • Māori Medium immersion early childhood education centres
  • Māori Medium immersion primary schools or kura
  • Māori Medium immersion secondary schools or wharekura
  • English Medium secondary schools, teaching te reo Māori as a language

There are options for graduates and undergraduate, from Early Childhood through to secondary and wharekura.

If you are proficient in te reo Māori, have a wealth of life experience and want to become a kaiako, this could be the scholarship for you.

Te Tipu Whakarito Scholarship

2024 applications open Tuesday 16 January 2024 and close Tuesday 13 February 2024

A Te Tipu Whakarito scholarship supports you to become a kaiako and follow your passion for te reo Māori.

The scholarship removes barriers by offering recipients financial assistance.

The scholarship is designed to assist applicants studying to teach in:

  • Māori Medium immersion early childhood education centres
  • Māori Medium immersion primary schools or kura
  • Māori Medium immersion secondary schools or wharekura
  • English Medium secondary schools, teaching te reo Māori as a language

There are options for graduates and undergraduate, from Early Childhood through to secondary and wharekura.

Kupe Scholarships for Māori and Pacific High Achievers

2024 applications open Tuesday 16 January 2024 and close Tuesday 13 February 2024

You must have a desire to strike out for far horizons and chart new territory on your journey to learn and grow.

You must embrace diversity and bring energy, intellect and enthusiasm to studying and teaching.

You must represent your whānau with pride and passion.

Although the bar is set high, if you're among the prestigious 30 chosen, you'll enjoy increased status and leadership potential with future employers. 

If you're of Māori or Pacific descent and you can see yourself becoming an outstanding role model in early childhood, primary or secondary education, consider applying to become a Kupe Scholar. Only 30 can be chosen. Will you be among them?
